The role
Research and analysis of global equity markets to identify outstanding investment opportunities for our
clients. In accordance with Orbis' proven investment philosophy, our investment analysts look at business
and industry fundamentals to determine a company's intrinsic value. They are expected to reach
well-researched, independent conclusions which often challenge conventional wisdom.
Development
New joiners on the investment team are mentored by a senior investment professional, but are expected to
contribute their own research from day one. Future opportunities are limited only by each team member's
potential to add value to the clients, so development is tailored to the strengths of the individual.
Formal training is kept to a minimum, but all analysts are supported through the CFA programme.
What we look for
There is no favoured academic discipline and no requirement for professional investment experience. Orbis
looks for people who have consistently demonstrated excellence in past pursuits, and whose personality and
temperament are suited to the demands of the role and the culture of the firm. Orbis analysts need to
combine the courage of acting on their convictions with the humility of recognising when they are wrong.
What new joiners can expect
Successful applicants will find that they are soon expected to take responsibility for their own decisions
and will be held accountable for their own investment recommendations. After an initial mentoring period,
junior analysts will be given the opportunity to test themselves with a simulated portfolio of their own
top ideas, from which some will move on to recommending stocks for the client portfolios. Along the way,
every new analyst will gain invaluable experience and be given the opportunity to learn directly from some
of the most talented and demonstrably successful bottom-up stock pickers in the industry.
Recruitment process
Orbis invites interested candidates to provide a CV as the first step of an application. Applicants may
then be asked to take a personality profiling analysis, which takes the form of an online test that can
be performed anywhere with an internet connection. Those subsequently asked for interview will typically
go through several rounds and may be asked to provide further written materials before an offer of
employment is made. Orbis is open for applications all year round.
How to apply
